The first bad grades come in and the answer seems obvious: extra help. The question is which kind. A private tutor at home? A learning center down the street? One of those AI study apps other parents mention?

The answer depends on a question almost nobody asks first: why are they struggling? Each option fixes a different problem. Choosing without knowing is the most expensive way to fix nothing.

First, the diagnosis

Almost every case of falling grades comes down to one of three causes:

  1. They don't study enough. They don't know the dates, don't have their notes, look at it the night before.
  2. They study, but badly. Hours with the book, rereading and highlighting, and they blank on the test.
  3. They're missing foundations. They always struggle in the same subjects, usually the cumulative ones (math, science, languages), and miss material from earlier years.

The quickest way to tell them apart is to look at graded tests together and talk to the teacher. We walk through it in what to do after a bad first report card.

Private tutor

When it makes sense: when they're missing foundations in one or two specific subjects. A good tutor finds the gap ("they haven't mastered fractions, that's why equations don't work") and fills it.

Pros:

  • One-on-one attention, at the student's pace.
  • Can go back and fill in what's missing from earlier years.
  • If they click with your kid, it also motivates.

Cons:

  • It's the most expensive option. Hourly rates vary a lot by city, level and experience; two hours a week over a school year easily adds up to several hundred in any currency.
  • It depends heavily on the person. A good one changes the year; one who just does homework with them changes nothing.
  • It creates dependence if the tutor isn't asked to teach them to work alone.

How to get the most out of it: give a concrete goal ("cover the algebra foundations by February"), not a generic "go over whatever they see in class."

Learning center

When it makes sense: when the problem is habit and they need a fixed place and time to work, or when several subjects are weak at once.

Pros:

  • Cheaper per hour than a private tutor.
  • Structure: a fixed schedule, someone checking that they work.
  • Some prepare well for specific exams (retakes, standardized tests).

Cons:

  • Attention is shared among several students, often from different grades and schools.
  • They usually follow their own curriculum, not your child's teacher's, and the tests that count are the school's.
  • If the problem is method, it can turn into "doing homework somewhere else."

How to get the most out of it: ask how many students per group, whether they work with the school's material and how they report progress to you.

AI study app

When it makes sense: when they study but badly, or when they need lots of practice before tests and don't have anything to practice with. Also as a complement to either of the other two.

Pros:

  • It works on their own material. With an app like ExamFlow, your child uploads their notes or photos of the textbook and creates practice exams and flashcards on exactly what they'll be tested on.
  • Instant grading, with an explanation of mistakes, at any hour.
  • It changes the method. It makes them practice by recalling, which is what actually prepares for a test, instead of rereading.
  • It's the cheapest option. ExamFlow has a free trial, a one-off pack from €4.99 and monthly plans from €7.49 (prices are on the pricing page).

Cons:

  • It doesn't replace a person when foundations are missing: it can explain a concept, but it won't figure out on its own that the problem goes back two years.
  • It needs some autonomy. A young child needs an adult nearby.
  • Without a schedule, it sits unopened on the phone like anything else.

And a common worry: won't they use it to cheat? It depends on how. Asking a chatbot to do the homework is cheating; having it quiz them on their notes and grade the answers is practice. More in AI for studying without cheating.

What usually works best: combining

In many cases the answer isn't a single option:

  • Weak foundations in math, poor method everywhere else: a tutor for math with a clear goal, and practice on their own notes for the rest.
  • No study habit: a learning center or a fixed schedule at home, with pre-test practice done by them.
  • Studies a lot and doesn't perform: before paying for lessons, try changing the method for two or three weeks and see if quiz scores go up.

How to tell if it's working

Whatever you choose, give it four to six weeks and watch for concrete signs, not just the report card:

  • They know when tests are without being reminded.
  • They start preparing for tests days ahead.
  • Quiz scores rise, even from a D to a C.

In ExamFlow, since accounts for minors are set up by the family, the Sunday weekly report goes to your inbox with the days they studied, their practice exams, their average score and the topics they struggle with most. You know how it's going without having to ask.

If nothing has changed after that, the diagnosis probably wasn't right: talk to the teacher again before adding more hours.
